THE LODGE

Curriculum

Directions to Northwoods

There are currently six cabins, each capable of sleeping eight students, and a main three-story lodge with modern-gas cooking facilities and refrigeration. The lodge and all six cabins were built using the tall pine trees on site. And best of all, the labor was furnished entirely by Hiram College faculty and students under the direction of professor Rae Knight.
Wood-burning stoves supply the heat, if required, for the lodge and cabins.  There is a telephone in the lodge.
You may live primitively by bathing in Cherry Lake, using the privies, and studying by gaslight. If you take a hot shower in the lodge or use the flush toilets there, you will need  to replenish the third-floor water tank by hand pumping the outside well. Many professors and students prefer this more primitive life-style.
For the less adventurous, there is 110 volt AC electricity in the lodge (not in the cabins) supplied by charged solar-panel batteries. This electricity is sufficient for lights, fans, charging digital-camera batteries, and other small appliances. Hair dryers, curling irons, televisions, and similar high-wattage devices will over tax the system and are not allowed. After taking a hot shower or using a flush toilet in the lodge, the solar power is also able to refill the third-floor water tank through an electric pump on a limited basis.

Study areas, viewing areas, outside deck, modern kitchen, presentation area, library, hot showers - a wonderful experience!
